Tents, campfires, s'mores and mosquitoes. The game for the evening by the fire once everyone has heard the guitar.
A set for people who head for the hills, pitch a tent by a lake or just love toasting marshmallows over a fire: the gear and the backpack, the campsite and cooking outdoors, the trail and its waymarks, forests, ridges and summits, the animals you meet on the way, and mountain weather that turns in an hour. Everything the group talks about around the campfire anyway — now against the clock and for points.
There is no socket for a console at a campsite and no room in the pack for a box of board games, but the evenings are long. Alias needs only a few phones and a lively group, so it fits perfectly after dinner by the fire. Every word in this set comes from life on the trail: the first level is known to any kid who has slept in a tent once, the second leans on gear and the mountains, and the third is about navigation, safety and what a long route teaches you.
While you still have signal, make a room on one phone and drop the link in the trip chat — everyone joins from their own phone, no app and no sign-up. Split into teams by tent, or old hands against first-timers. Three rounds take about half an hour, just long enough for the fire to burn down and the kettle to boil. Pick the easy level when kids are along, medium for a regular group, and hard when the guides and summit-baggers are sitting by the fire.
S'mores
Works: "a toasted marshmallow and a square of chocolate squeezed between two crackers by the fire". The recipe gives it away. Fails: "a campfire dessert" — the team will say "marshmallow", "chocolate" and "banana boat", and never land on the word.
Switchback
Works: "the trail zigzags up a steep slope instead of going straight, turn after turn". Show the shape of the path. Fails: "a hard part of the trail" — the team will go through climb, ascent and ridge first. Name what the path does, not how it feels.
Bearing
Works: "the angle from north you take off the compass when there is no path, then you walk along it". Fails: "a direction on the compass" — the team will say "north", "heading" and "route". Abstract words land through what your hands actually do.
The first trap is gear: sleeping pad, sleeping bag, hammock and blanket all sit in the same pack, so "what you sleep on outdoors" is a guessing game. Give one detail: what it is made of, where it goes, what it hangs from. The second is near-twins: campfire and bonfire, pot and kettle, summit and pass, trail and route. Find the difference: where you stand, what you cook, where you climb to. The third is explaining through "like on our trip last summer": a shared story only half the team was on. Talk about what anyone who has slept in a tent has seen.
