Hobbies Alias words — 300 words about pastimes for groups

Fishing rods, knitting needles, chess and sourdough. The game where everyone finally gets to show off their hobby.

A set about what people do once work is over: crafts and painting, fishing and gardening, board games, photography, baking, music, hiking and climbing. With the gear and the jargon of every pastime — from hooks and needles to shutter speed, bait and zugzwang.

Why hobbies make a great Alias theme

Every group has its angler, its crochet queen, its chess player and someone who has been feeding a sourdough starter for three months. This set lets everyone be the expert for a moment: a word from your own hobby takes you two seconds, while somebody else's will make you sweat. The first level is what kids already play with, the second is the pastimes and kit every adult knows, and the third is the jargon only the truly hooked use.

How to play with friends

Make a room on one phone and drop the link in the group chat — everyone joins from their own phone, no app and no sign-up. Splitting teams by hobby is half the fun: crafters against hikers, or mix them so every team has its own specialist. Three rounds take about half an hour. Pick the easy level with kids, medium for any crowd, and hard when there are real enthusiasts at the table who can tell a lure from a jig and glazing from a wash.

Puzzle

Works: "a thousand little cardboard pieces of one picture that you put together on the table, edges first". An action plus a detail everyone knows. Fails: "a game for patient people" — the team will go through chess, dominoes and solitaire and never land on it.

Bait

Works: "what an angler puts on the hook so the fish bites: a worm, bread, sweetcorn". A short list of examples cuts out the wrong answers. Fails: "a fishing thing" — the team will say rod, float and hook, and all of them will be right.

Zugzwang

Works: "in chess you have to move, but every possible move makes your position worse". Explain the situation, not where the word comes from. Fails: "a hard chess term" — there are dozens, and the team will try checkmate, stalemate and gambit first.

Where groups trip up

The first trap is gear that looks alike: knitting needles and a crochet hook, a rod and a reel, a tripod and an easel. Say what you do with the thing and how it differs from its neighbour. The second is explaining through "what my uncle does at the lake": nobody else has met your uncle. Stick to what everyone recognises. The third is jargon: the team's photographer guesses "bokeh" from half a word while everyone else is lost. On the hard level, explain for the people who don't share the hobby — through the result you can see in a photo, on a plate or in your hands.
