Countdown, eggnog, carols and tangerines. The game that keeps the party going after dinner.
A set for New Year's Eve and the Christmas evenings around it: the tree and its lights, the festive table, winter weather, carols and nativity plays, presents, fireworks and the promises we make ourselves at midnight. Everything the party talks about between toasts anyway — now against the clock and for points.
A holiday crowd is always mixed: kids and grandparents, old friends and somebody's new partner. Alias needs no long explanation and no box of cards, and it gets the whole room talking at once. Every word in this set belongs to the season: the first level is known to any six-year-old, the second leans on traditions and the festive menu, and the third is about what we feel and promise ourselves on the last night of the year.
While you wait for midnight, make a room on one phone and drop the link in the group chat — everyone joins from their own phone, no app and no sign-up. Split into teams of two or three: couples against couples, or kids against grown-ups. Three rounds take about half an hour, just right between the main course and dessert. Pick the easy level when children play, medium for the whole family, and hard once the kids are asleep.
Countdown
Works: "the last ten seconds before midnight, when the whole room shouts the numbers together". A moment everyone has lived. Fails: "the New Year moment" — the team will say "midnight", "fireworks" and "cheers", and never land on the word.
Mistletoe
Works: "the green sprig hung over a doorway — whoever stands under it gets kissed". The custom gives it away. Fails: "a Christmas plant" — the team will go through holly, poinsettia and the tree itself first. Name what people do with it, not what it is.
Resolution
Works: "what you promise yourself on January first and quietly drop by February — gym, diet, no phone in bed". Fails: "a New Year goal" — the team will say "wish", "plan" and "dream". Abstract words land through the situation everyone recognises.
The first trap is the festive menu: turkey, ham, pudding and pie all sit on the same table, so "a Christmas dish" is a guessing game. Give the one detail the neighbour dish lacks. The second is near-twins: carol and hymn, fireworks and sparklers, sled and sleigh. Find the difference — who sings it and where, what you hold in your hand, who pulls it. The third is "like in that film": every family has its own holiday movies, and somebody else's quote helps nobody. Describe what everyone sees at their own table.
Familiar words that land on the first clue. For warming up, for kids and for mixed groups.
