Home words for Alias — rooms, furniture, chores

Sofa, vacuum, chores and the drawer where everything gets lost. Words from under your own roof.

A set about the home: rooms and furniture, kitchen things, cleaning, repairs, neighbours and everything an evening at home smells of. From the pillow to the fuse. The closest words of all — the room is sitting right among them.

Who this set is for

Everyone takes the first level: there is a sofa and a fridge in every home. Then come skirting, mixer tap and mezzanine — anyone who has survived a renovation will smile. The third level is for people who have changed a fuse themselves or picked out laminate.

Who this set is for

Any group gathered at home: half the words can be shown with the eyes. Couples who just moved in — for them skirting and mixer tap are painful and funny at once. Families with children do especially well on the easy level: a child lives among these things and names them faster than the adults.

Vacuum

Works: “it roars and the cat runs under the bed.” One household effect instead of a description of the device. Does not work: “an appliance for removing dust” — the room waits for a hint you cannot give and starts guessing broom, duster, mop.

Skirting

Works: “the strip at the bottom of the wall that everything you drop rolls behind.” A place and a familiar nuisance. Does not work: “a decorative element of the floor” — the room says laminate, carpet, threshold and reaches the word last.

Draught

Works: “you open two windows and the door slams.” Everyone has heard that. Does not work: “a flow of air in a room” — sounds like physics, and the room starts with wind, ventilation. Explain household phenomena through what they do to things.

Where groups go wrong

The first trap is pointing. Half the words are standing in the room and the hand reaches for the sofa by itself, but that is no longer an explanation. The second is words with the root inside: dishwasher, hairdryer, bookshelf describe themselves, and the explainer blurts out dish or hair. Come in through sound, effect, situation. The third is chores explained through other chores: “like cleaning, but with water” does not help, while “what you do with the plates after dinner” does.
