Cows, tractors, haymaking and grandma’s vegetable patch. For a group that once spent a summer in the country.
A set about country life: farm animals and poultry, the vegetable patch and the field, the tools in the shed and work from dawn to dusk. The first level is a summer at grandma’s, the third is a chat with an agronomist. No wild animals here — they have a set of their own.
Almost every family has some countryside in it, even a city one: hen, rake and well are explained with one scene from the holidays. The medium level wants someone who has seen a working farm up close, and the hard one — silage, threshing, fallow — rests on whoever has actually planted potatoes.
A family evening with children and grandparents at the same table: first-graders play the easy level, and the older generation finally beats the young. It also works for friends who grew up in different corners of the country — each has their own word for the same shed. Bring out the hard level when at least one real allotment gardener is in the room.
Henhouse
Works: “the little house where the chickens sleep and where you go for eggs in the morning.” A place through those who live in it and a morning routine. Does not work: “a building for poultry” — the room will say barn, shed and cage before it reaches the word you want.
Scythe
Works: “a long curved blade on a pole that you swing across the meadow early in the morning, while the dew is still on the grass.” The movement and the hour give the word at once. Does not work: “a tool for cutting grass” — the room goes to lawnmower and sickle and stays there.
Haymaking
Works: “the summer weeks when the whole village is out in the meadow with rakes, and everyone rides home on the cart.” Does not work: “collecting dry grass for the animals” — correct, but the room says hay, fodder and haystack and gets lost between them. Farm work is best explained through a season and a picture.
The first trap is mixing up the farm and the forest: “an animal with horns” can be a goat or a deer, and there are no deer in this set. Make clear that the animal lives on a farm and what it gives people. The second is regional words: one person says barn, another byre, a third cowshed, and all of them are right. If the room names a neighbouring word, help with a feature, not a synonym. The third is describing tools by their shape: “a stick with prongs” is a rake, a pitchfork and a harrow all at once. Show what you do with it.
