Borscht, sunflowers, embroidered shirts and chestnut trees in Kyiv. Ukraine as people live it every day.
A set about Ukraine without politics: food, holidays and rituals, clothing and crafts, landscapes and the cities people travel to. From varenyky to the trembita. Cities and rivers are here too, but only the ones a traveller or a Ukrainian family abroad would know.
The first level asks nothing special: sunflower, stork, borscht. Then come pysanka, bandura and the Carpathians — words anyone with Ukrainian friends has heard, but harder to explain. The hard level — chernozem, Synevyr, didukh — is for people who have been there or grew up with it.
A Ukrainian family abroad, a Saturday school, friends who are learning the language, or anyone whose grandmother made varenyky on Sundays. Children take stork and dumpling, adults take kobzar and Polissia. It also works as a gentle introduction for guests who have never been to Ukraine: the easy level is a ready vocabulary list.
Pysanka
Works: “an egg decorated with wax and dye before Easter, where every pattern means something.” Through how it is made. Does not work: “an Easter souvenir” — the room says basket, bunny and chocolate before the word you want. Show the difference from a plain dyed egg straight away: here it is a drawing, not one colour.
Trembita
Works: “a wooden horn three metres long that shepherds blow from one Carpathian mountain to the next.” Size and place, and the word is there. Does not work: “a folk wind instrument” — the room switches to flute, pipe and bagpipes and gets stuck.
Chernozem
Works: “the black soil so rich that anything you push into it grows — the reason Ukraine feeds half the world.” Colour and use do the job. Does not work: “a type of soil” — the room says clay, sand and dirt and never reaches the Ukrainian word.
The first trap is loanwords. Varenyky, pysanka and bandura are Ukrainian words living in English, and not everyone has met them; explain through what they look like rather than through a translation that names half the word. The second is geography by compass: “a city in the west” fits a dozen places. Give one picture instead — the lions of Lviv, the stairs in Odesa. The third is the holidays: “something at Christmas” opens a long list, so name one act — who sings, who carries what, what burns.
Familiar words that land on the first clue. For warming up, for kids and for mixed groups.
